ADVENTURE PLAY!
These are a
few of the new friends who found each other in Adventure Play, a
joint program of the
Howell Nature Center
and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Livingston County.
Adventure Play was facilitated at Round Elementary in Hartland,
Latson Elementary in Howell, Smith Elementary in Fowlerville and
Farley Hill Elementary in Pinckney. At each school, 15 first and
second graders who need a little extra support and encouragement
are paired for 10 weeks with high school-aged mentors or Bigs.
For an hour after school once a week, they join in games that
boost confidence and teach cooperation and problem-solving.
With permission from their parents, the first and second graders
were picked for Adventure Play by teachers, counselors or social
workers at the schools. Mentors were screened by Big Brothers
Big Sisters and the games were developed by the
Howell Nature Center.
The majority of the Adventure Play mentors are high school
students. While they are providing mentoring to younger
students, they are also learning leadership skills.
The teenage mentors, who admit they are learning a lot about
patience, are also believers in the success of Adventure Play.
They really care!
The schools are grateful for the support of these two community
groups. Working together makes a difference.
