Mentoring Activities
At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Livingston County we offer a
variety of programs to support our youth. Whether you can give
two hours a week or two hours a month, our mentoring programs
can find a child who not only needs you but can fit easily into
your lifestyle.Community-Based Programs
In our Community-Based program, a volunteer is
matched in a one-on-one relationship with a Little Brother or
Little Sister ages five through sixteen. Activities take place
in the community without on-site supervision of agency staff.
Site-Based Programs
In our Site-Based programs, Bigs and Littles are matched in
an individual or group setting (one-to-one mentoring still takes
place) in order to strengthen social, academic, decision-making,
or problem-solving skills. All match activities take place in a
supervised location.
- Matches On The Move
(Made possible through a grant from NIKE): This program
offers elementary and middle school students the opportunity
to participate in a planned, hands-on activity. Mentors and
Littles meet once a month in the early evening at various
fun locations around the county.
-
Adventure
Play (Made possible through a grant from the
Gannett Foundation and Heartland
Foundation): In partnership with the Howell Nature Center,
1st and 2nd graders are mentored in an after-school program.
For 10 weeks, Bigs and Littles meet weekly engaging in fun
activities which teach life skills and goal setting.
"…helped
him to be serious about learning, and to show him other
older individuals care a lot. A great program” ~ Mrs. Shaw,
teacher at Latson Road Elementary
- Lunch Buddies (Made
possible through a grant from Citizens Insurance): This
program offers elementary school children the opportunity to
eat lunch and share special time with a mentor during their
lunch hour. Mentors meet with their Little bi-weekly at a
school close to their home or work.
“Meghan has also shown improvement in general
socialization. Her self-confidence has risen immensely!” ~
Mrs. Tolles, teacher at Latson Road Elementary
- Bridges: This
program provides a team-oriented, initiative-based mentoring
program for middle school students in order to strengthen
decision-making and problem-solving skills. High schoolers
volunteer as the mentors forming relationships that will
help the middle school student transition into high school.
Mentors from a partnering high school meet with their
Littles weekly for a semester.
